UK newspapers continue to focus on global audience potential

Times_globa
The Times has launched a global version online, according to Media Guardian.

Sensibly, the paper is signalling its commitment to competing for readers on the world stage. UK national newspapers have a great opportunity globally, due to the prevalence of the English language, the quality of their content and reporting infrastructure, and their ability to - often - eschew parochialism.

A global edition is an interesting approach. As I noted the other day, the Times ranks 14th as a global news source already, the Guardian - without recourse to global edition - is 8th.

: : Nice to see that Jeff Jarvis likes UK newspapers' style. The healthy competition in the UK newspaper market is another reason some of its brands can compete globally.

Some have speculated that the weak US newspaper market as a reason that citizen journalism and blogs have grown so far and fast there - perhaps, ironically, the fact that national UK media serves us well is one reason for slightly slower adoption of the new medium here.

It makes sense. I am a great believer that we only need one global edition of each title, so that another nation’s issue is as important as our own, although I realize that dream is still a wee while away.
